Things to know about traveling to Canada

All information on this page is supposed to be for German tourists visiting Canada from Europe. So, for example, immigration conditions may be different for other countries.

Entering Canada as a tourist

eTA

For German citizens, the entry to Canada through the Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is quite simple. In addition to an approved eTA application, you also need a valid German passport and a valid return ticket.

The eTA application can be made at the following link. eTA application. The forms can also be displayed in German, to be sure that you understand and fill in everything correctly. The fee for the application is 7CAD. It can be payed either by credit card or Paypal. Approval can be immediate, but it can also take a few hours or days. So don't get impatient if it takes a little while.

However, an approved application does not guarantee that you will actually be allowed to enter Canada. The decision is made by the immigration officer on site at the respective airport of entry. eTA is only valid for tourists and for a maximum stay of 6 months at a time. The eTa application is valid for 5 years and you can enter Canada as often as you like during this time.

If you enter the country by land, you do not need an eTA!!!

APIS

The abbreviation stands for Advance Passenger Information System. This allows additional relevant passenger data to be collected by the authorities prior to flight departure. APIS data can be submitted in various ways:
- When booking a flight
- When booking a flight with the airline via an online form.
- Filling out a paper form e.g. at the check-in at the airport

Immigration and customs

To speed up the entry process, you will be given a customs form to fill out on the plane before arrival.

At the airport of entry, you are automatically guided to the hall where immigration to Canada takes place. For some time now there are machines that speed up and facilitate the entry. Here, too, you can register at the machines in your native language. To make sure that you fill in anything correctly, we would recommend this. At the machines you get a printout with which you then proceed to the immigration officer. From the officer you get the stamp in your passport. Then you pick up your suitcase and go through customs. Here you hand in the customs form that you filled in on the plane. Everyone has to go through this procedure, even if you have a connecting flight within Canada.

If you have a connecting flight, you again have to check in your luggage right after customs. Most of the time you also have to go through security again. Afterward you can head on to your new gate to continue your flight. For such a connecting flight in Canada we would recommend to plan at least 2 hours time.

Time zones

In Canada, too, the time is changed from winter to summer time.

In 2024, clocks will change to Daylight Saving Time on March 10th and to Standard Time on November 3rd.

Public Holidays in Canada

Of course, Canada also has some holidays and just like everywhere else, these holidays are the days of the year when, especially in tourist hotspots, it is very busy. Therefore, we can only recommend everyone to avoid these days and the weekends before or to make timely arrangements such as hotel bookings. Here you can read everything important about the holidays.

Phone and Internet on the Road

Our experience with SIM cards in Canada is limited to our vacation in Ontario and Québec 2021.

Just like in the U.S., you basically don't need a SIM card, but we certainly got to know the benefits of it. The biggest advantage for us was navigating via the Internet browser. We could use this feature all the time with the SIM card. We could save the additional costs for an extra navigation device. That alone amortized the cost of the SIM card. Another nice gimmick is being able to use WhatsApp with your German number. Even if you get your own Canadian number, you can set WhatsApp to keep your German number. On long car trips, I had fun chatting with people and sending current photos back home.

We opted for the card from Holafly with unlimited data volume. The whole process was professional and super easy. In contrast to the funtravel card we had in the US, there were a few minor problems with this one. For one, the coverage was not always really good. Even in larger places such as Mont Laurier we had no network although that should have been the case according to the map of the provider. In addition, the assigned Canadian number was probably assigned several times, because during the three weeks of our stay we received numerous calls and messages from unknown people.

Nevertheless, we were satisfied with the card all in all. The big advantage was the unlimited data volume so that you could also use services like Instagram.

Canada Discovery Pass

Just like the Anual Pass in the USA, the Canada Discovery Pass offers access to over 100 national parks in Canada. You pay a one-time fee of 151.25 CAN (as of May 2024) and can then use the pass for one year. We can only recommend getting such a pass if you plan to visit several national parks on your trip. The pass is valid for 7 people in one car. If you are traveling alone, the price for an adult is 75.25 CAN.
