Maui – The East
Maui - Hawaii
...a short remark in advance...
As already mentioned on the overview pages, we visited the Hawaiian Islands in 2000. At the time these pages are created (February 2020), our visit will be almost 20 years ago. Although we have fond memories of our three weeks on the islands, all of our assessments are based on 20-year-old memories. Even though the locations we describe here still exist, the circumstances have certainly changed. We ask you to keep this in mind. All opening hours and entrance fees are as of February 2020.
Road to Hana
Description: The Road to Hana is a 62mi long road on the north coast of Maui. She leads from Kahului to Hana. On the winding coastal road you pass over 50 bridges, rainforests, waterfalls and botanical gardens. For the drive to Hana and back you should plan a whole day. There is a lot to see.
Our rating: The drive to Hana was one of the highlights of our visit at Maui. We stopped very often to enjoy the great scenery. Thus, the journey was very slow. For us, this drive is a "must see" at Maui.
Tedeschi Winery
Description: Tedeschi Winery, now called Maui Wine, is one of the wineries on Maui. This one is located on the southern flank of Haleakala. Tours of the grounds are offered in addition to wine tastings.
For the GPS: 14815 Piilani Hwy, Kula, HI 96790
Our rating: Nice little stop. We took the tour of the winery and wondered about the pipe with the sticker glycol.
The wines we tasted were probably ok. If they had been particularly great or bad, we probably would have made a note of it.
Alexander & Baldwin Sugar Museum
Description: Located amid Maui's sugar cane fields, the Sugar Museum offers a glimpse into sugar cane farming and the role of Alexander and Baldwin in the Hawaiian sugar industry.
Our rating: The museum was tiny in August 2000, but we thought it was quite interesting to walk through the exhibits and learn about sugar cane cultivation. Not an absolute must see, but quite nice.
