Hite
Description: One of the few bridges over the Colorado River is located near Hite. Here is the only crossing between Moab and Page. At the time when the water level in Lake Powell was higher and there was still a lake at this point, there was a large boat landing in Hite. Since the place is part of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area a ranger station and a small grocer's store also existed. Since boats can no longer dock, Hite has more or less become a ghost town.
Our rating: The last time we were here in October 2011, the water of Lake Powell still reached as far as Hite. Today there is no more lake at this place. You can only see the riverbed of the Colorado.
The landscape around Hite is worth seeing and we wanted to pass by here from time to time, but our tours didn't lead us here anymore.
Update April 2022: After the drought in the Southwest has been going on for a very long time, Lake Powell around Hite has completely disappeared. The lake no longer exists and the Colorado River is carved into its riverbed by an estimated 65ft. If and when there will ever be water here again is probably up in the stars. The sight is certainly terrifying.
