La Plata Badlands
Around Farmington - New Mexico
Note: On dirt roads, road conditions can change constantly. Therefore, we strongly recommend that everyone check the road conditions before each trip. We do not recommend driving on unpaved roads before, during or shortly after rain or snowfall.

La Plata Badlands
Description: The LaPlata Bandlands are located about 6.5mi north of Farmington. The drive to the Badlands is via Highway 170. Since oil and gas is produced in the area, there are several roads that lead into the Badlands. A staff member at the BLM office in Farmington gave us directions on which access road to take. We visited the Badlands in October 2011. During our visit, we were able to move freely everywhere. There are several roads that crisscross the Badlands. We drove about 9mi through the Badlands and did not see any barriers.
Our rating: We liked the Badlands very much, especially because of the great colors. Surely you could leave the car and explore the landscape on foot. The Badlands are definitely a place you could devote more than an afternoon to.
