Grave of Billy the Kid
Description: Billy the Kid, whose real name was William H. Bonney, is one of the most famous gunmen of the Wild West. He is the subject of many stories and legends. He is accused of 9-21 murders, although only 4 are actually proven. In April 1881 he was sentenced to death. He could flee, however, and was shot on July 14, 1881, so to speak on the run, by Sheriff Pat Garrett, who pursued him, here in Fort Sumner.
Our rating: Not a must see location. But it happened to be on our route and therefore we made a small stopover here. Eventually we liked to learn something about one of the outlaws of that time.
Billy the Kid Museum
Description: The Billy the Kid Museum is located right in the small town of Fort Sumner. It is home to thousands of objects from the time of Billy the Kid. There are numerous indoor and outdoor rooms with countless objects.
Our rating: You don't necessarily have to travel here because of the museum. The sheer mass of things has then also almost struck us during our visit in February 2018. It is a huge collection of everything. Anyone who likes to look at relics from the 19th century and the Wild West will feel right at home here.
