Salvation Mountain
The South - California
Salvation Mountain
Description: In 1984, Leonard Knight began building Salvation Mountain to spread the message that God loves everyone . He lived on his land without electricity or running water. In order to remain as independent as possible with his message, he also largely dispensed with donations. The unusual location subsequently attracted more and more people.
For this reason, there were frequent attempts by the government to close the location to the public. However, since Leonard Knight was already known far beyond the borders of California, all attempts failed. On February 10, 2014, Leonard Knight passed away, but Salvation Mountain can still be visited. Next to the mountain, the old Chevrolet designed by Knight and other things from his life are still standing.
Our rating: For me as an artist, a must see. It is always fascinating to see how people realize their visions. Unfortunately, a sandstorm raged during our visit in February 2016, so the visibility was correspondingly poor and we were already quite limited by the circumstances. We will come again - sometime.
