Around the Salton Sea
Description: The Salton Sea is the largest lake in California. Once formed by an artificial inflow from the Colorado, it is no longer connected to the same. There are a few feeder streams from smaller bodies of water, but no outlet. The water level regulates itself by evaporation. This, together with the over-fertilization of the agricultural lands around, lead to an increasing salinization and pollution of the lake. This has also led to the increasing abandonment of the local recreation areas that were established in the 1950s.
Around the lake there is a huge agricultural area. Unfortunately, during our visit in February 2016, a huge sandstorm was raging. So we could not really explore the Salton Sea.
Our rating: To really evaluate the area, we have to come back again. Because of the sandstorm we could hardly get out of the car.
