Los Angeles
The South - California
Highlights in Los Angeles
Description: Founded in 1781 by a Spanish governor, Los Angeles is now the largest city in California and the second largest in the United States after New York City. Located in the south of the state, Los Angeles is not one city in particular, rather it is an amalgamation of several cities into one huge metropolis.
Los Angeles is not one of our favorite cities in the USA, not only because of the unspeakably bad traffic, but on the other hand there are some really great highlights that are worth a visit.
Our rating: As already mentioned, L.A. is not necessarily one of our favorite cities. For us, it's just way too huge. To get from A to B, you sometimes need several hours. That's just not our thing. For this reason, we only visited the city during our first vacation in the USA. In recent years, we have made a wide berth around the city or have used it only for arrivals and departures. At the end of August 2019, we gave the city another chance and visited a few locations that were still on our list.
Accommodation Tip: Of course, in such a huge city there are countless possibilities to stay overnight. We would recommend to look for a place to stay in the area where you mainly want to stay. Because of the sometimes extreme traffic, it might also make sense to change hotels if you plan to stay longer and visit different places. This way, you avoid having to drive across the city due to the sometimes heavy traffic and thus possibly wasting hours on the road.
During our June 2023 visit, we stayed at Motel Sakura in Glendale. We liked it very much. Our more detailed review can be found on our Hotel page.
Our visits: So far 6 visits in August 1992, August 1994, April 1997, February 2016, September 2019, and June 2023
