Mono Lake South Tufas
Description: Mono Lake is a soda lake with a very high salt content. It is also so high because for decades far too much water was diverted from the lake. However, the sinking of the level had the consequence that the lime tuff formations, which had developed under water, came to light. In the early 1980s, protests arose against the high water withdrawal from the lake. This resulted in a limitation of the withdrawal quantities and so since the 90s the level has been rising again.
Our rating: The tufas at Mono Lake are something special. Not without reason all famous landscape photographers have taken pictures here. You can discover lots of bizarre formations and it's fun to walk around the lake between the tufas. It is also especially beautiful at sunrise and sunset.
