Hot Creek Geological Site

Description: Hot Creek Geological Site is reached by a 3mi unpaved road. It is a junction of Highway 395, east of Mammoth Lakes. The road is very well maintained and would have been passable by a passenger car during our visit in September 2019.

The hot springs here are formed by volcanic activity close to the earth's surface. In the process, hot water containing minerals comes to the surface. Since poisonous gases and toxic substances such as arsenic often escape, it is not allowed to approach the springs. There is a 0.4 mile trail down to the creek, but it does not take you to the blue pools, only to the opposite side of the creek.

Our rating: A very nice viewpoint, from which you can look at the pretty blue pools. No absolute highlight, but who still has half an hour time should quietly stop by. We were here in the late afternoon and found the lighting for photos ok. In the morning, the pools were in the shade.
