Sacramento

The North - California

Our visits: So far 2 visits in September 1999 and September 2019

Downtown

Description: Sacramento grew out of Fort Sutter, which was built by Johann August Sutter in 1839 at the confluence of the American and Sacramento Rivers. The few high-rise buildings are almost all located along the Capitol Mall, the street that leads representatively to the California State Capitol.

Our rating: During our visit in September 2019, we found the capital of California to be a quiet and rather laid back smaller city. It was very relaxing to stroll through the streets and explore everything. Certainly not a must see, but still nice.

3/5

Old Town

Description: The historic district, with many old houses that date back to the gold rush era, is tranquilly located right on the Sacramento River. There are many restaurants, stores and museums. Thus, the Old Town is one of the tourist attractions of the city.

Our rating: We visited Sacramento's Old Town in September 2019. It was fun to stroll through the streets, along the stores. Anyone who is in Sacramento should definitely take a peek here.

3.5/5

California State Capitol

Description: The Capitol is the seat of California government and the governor. The building was completed in 1874 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

When we visited in September 2019, the front view was covered up because the grand entrance staircase is undergoing extensive renovation.

For the GPS: 1315 10th St Room B-27, Sacramento, CA 95814

Our rating:  Whenever the opportunity is given, we visit the respective State Capitols. Here, too, we were able to take part in a very interesting guided tour and learned a thing or two about the Sunshine State. Who is a little interested in the history of California will certainly not be disappointed here.

2.5/5
As a former governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger's portrait also hangs in the Capitol.

Tower Bridge

Description: The Tower Bridge is a lift bridge over the Sacramento River. It was designed by Alfred Eichler and completed in 1960. The bridge is 738ft long, 161ft high and 52ft wide. In 1982 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Our rating: It is located picturesquely next to the Old Town of Sacramento. The bridge provides an attractive photo opportunity both during the day and at night.
