Leadville
Description: Leadville experienced its prime when a large silver deposit was found in 1877. By 1880, one of the largest silver mining settlements had developed, with a population of over 40,000. Besides silver, gold, lead, zinc and copper were also mined. Situated at an altitude of over 9850ft, today it is especially interesting for athletes who set up their high-altitude training camps here. Most people in the historic, beautifully restored town today live from tourism.
Our rating: After three attempts, we finally managed to visit this nice little town in October 2018. If you enjoy historic small towns, you'll like it here too. There are small cafes and stores and it was fun to stroll up and down the street.
