White House Campground

Description: You can reach the campground by turning left at the Paria Contact Station, onto White House Road. The Contact Station is located about 30mi west of Page and about 44mi east of Kanab just off Highway 89. The campground is located at the end of this road. The beautiful colored rocks are all around the campground. There are no trails, you can walk all around.

Another small side note for campers: After heavy rains, the washes you have to cross on the way to the campground can block your way back. When we visited Nautilus in October 2018, campers were in the process of shoveling the wash dry again. They were trapped in the site for 3 days because it was no possible to cross the wash. (Image below)

Our rating: If we were campers, this would definitely be a campsite we'd spend the night at. The location on the Paria River and the colorful rocks provide the perfect setting for a campfire at sunset. But even without spending the night here, it's just fun to walk around among the great, colorful rocks.

Paria Canyon

Description: Also the trail through Paria Canyon starts at White House Campground. You can walk inside or above the canyon. During our visit in October 2011, the river was unfortunately very muddy and wet, so we followed it about 1mi above.

Our rating: The hike along Paria Canyon to the Confluence with the Buckskin Gulch is still on our bucket list. Whenever we were in the area and had time, Paria river carries too much water to hike in it. We can't really give it a rating because of that either. What we have seen so far, we really liked.
