Fort Davis NHS
Description: Fort Davis was established in 1854 as a military base. Its main purpose was to protect the trade route between San Antonio and El Paso. In 1871, the fort became the administrative headquarters of the county. However, when it was moved to Marfa a few years later because of the railroad, the fort became less and less important. In 1890 it was completely abandoned by the military. The buildings fell into disrepair.
Since 1966, the fort became a National Historic Site. Some buildings were listed as historic monuments. Thus, the fort was preserved and serves tourist purposes today.
Our rating: We usually enjoy such historical places, because they take you back to an almost forgotten time and give you an impression of the sometimes very difficult life that the people of that time had to live. We can recommend a visit here.
