Fort Clark
Description: Fort Clark served as a border station for the state of Texas in the mid-19th century. Positioned at a strategically important point, it was one of a series of forts built on the border to Mexico. Among other things, they also served to protect the road to El Paso, which was militarily important.
It served as a military base until 1946. Since 1979 it has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Today the fort has several functions. There is a hotel, a campground and many recreational opportunities. For example, there is also a golf course. Some of the historic buildings can be visited, others are permanently inhabited.
Our rating: We came across the fort more or less by chance because we wanted to stretch our legs on our way to San Antonio. It is quite interesting to drive through the streets, but for us it is not a must see.
Another little remark: If you want to enter the fort, you have to give your personal details at the gate. We did not have to pay an entrance fee.
