New Orleans

Description: New Orleans is a major city at the mouth of the Mississippi River on the Gulf of Mexico. Economically, it has significance because of its location, especially as a port city. New Orleans is known for its French Quarter with its many colonial-style houses, its music scene and Creole food. In addition, Mardi Gras is held here every year. A huge celebration of carnival. Another tourist attraction is the city's cemeteries. Because of the city's location, the deceased can only be buried in mausoleums. These often great designed tombs attract crowds of people every year.

In 2005, Hurricane Katrina destroyed very large parts of the city. There were dam bursts and huge floods. The population almost halved afterwards because people simply had no place to live. Only in recent years the numbers of residents are slowly rising again.

Our rating: New Orleans left us with a two-part feeling. On the one hand, we didn't always feel very comfortable, especially when driving into the city. The city didn't seem particularly inviting to us. On the other hand, in the French Quarter, for example, we felt drawn into the special atmosphere that prevailed in the streets. There were special smells of food, music everywhere and a good mood.
We definitely want to visit New Orleans again, because somehow we have the feeling that we are not quite done with the city yet... Let's see when it will fit into one of our tours again.
