Savannah
Georgia
Our visits: So far 1 visit in October 2016
Fort Pulaski
Description: The fort is a huge defense facility just off the coast of Savannah. Its construction began in 1929 and today it is a National Monument and can be visited.
For the GPS: US-80, Savannah, GA 31410
Our rating: Unfortunately, because of a hurricane that had passed through here two weeks before our visit, we could not visit the fort. It was flooded. So we had to postpone the visit to a possible next tour.
Entrance fees and opening hours
- 10$/person
- Covered by the Anual Pass*
- All year 9am to 5pm except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.
*The Anual Pass is so to speak the "flat rate" for all Parks managed by the National Park Service. The pass costs a one-time fee of $80 and can be purchased at the entrance to each National Park, National Monument, etc. The pass is valid for 13 months.
Tybee Island
Description: Tybee Island is a small island just off the coast of Savannah. Here you can enjoy a beautiful beach. Besides a small village, there is also a lighthouse on the island. It was built in 1736 and can be visited.
Our rating: We also liked Tybee Island. Here you can certainly spend a nice vacation at the ocean. The beaches were completely empty and looked very nice. If you are in Savannah, you should definitely check this place out.
Bonaventure Cemetery
Description: Bonaventure is a public cemetery with many old gravestones. These are surrounded by a lot of old trees, which are fully hung with Spanish Moss. The cemetery became famous through the novella Midnight in the Garden of good an evil by John Berendt and the movie of the same name with Clint Eastwood.
For the GPS: 330 Bonaventure Rd, Thunderbolt, GA 31404
Our rating: Unfortunately, the cemetery was closed during our visit in October 2016. Due to the hurricane that passed through here two weeks before, several fallen trees could be seen here as well. For safety reasons, we were not allowed on the grounds. This location also remains on our todo list.
Wormsloe Historic Site
Description: Not much more is left of the former plantation than a few foundation walls. But what is left, besides the impressive entrance gate, is the great oak avenue.
For the GPS: 7601 Skidaway Rd, Savannah, GA 31406
Our rating: Not an absolute must see, but if you like oak avenues, you should take a quick look here. You don't see such a great avenue very often.
Savannah
Description: The old city center of Savannah impresses with great, renovated, old houses and many shady places, which are overgrown with shady trees.
The city was founded in 1733 by General James Oglethorpe, directly on the Savannah River. Formerly an important cotton transshipment point, Savannah is still a thriving and important trading port today.
Tipp: At the Savannah Visitor Center (301 Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, Savannah, GA 31401) there is a large parking lot. From here you can easily take the hop on hop off bus, or explore the city on foot.
Our rating: Unfortunately, we only had one day in Savannah. Because we could not walk all the sights, we decided to take a hop-on hop-off bus. This way we were able to see many of the attractions in Savannah in a relatively short time. We still didn't miss a walk through some of the really pretty parks and squares.
We liked Savannah very much. The atmosphere in the city was very pleasant and we felt very comfortable. The beautifully renovated houses and the trees hanging full of Spanish Moss contributed to the great experience. Through the trees it is also very shady everywhere and you do not notice the otherwise prevailing heat so much.
