The Palouse
The East - Washington
Our visits: So far 1 visit in June 2015
The Palouse
Description: The silt dunes that now form the rolling hills of the Palouse were formed during the last ice age. It is today one of the most important wheat-growing areas in the United States. While in earlier times the cultivation and harvesting of the fields was very time-consuming, it is now much less work-intensive due to modern technology and machinery.
Our rating: We really enjoyed the drive along the rolling, picturesque hills. The colorful farms offer a great contrast to the green and brown hills. So you always find a nice photo motif on the way and a reason to stop and look.
The Codger Pole
Description: Located in downtown Colfax, just off Highway 195, the Codger Pole was erected in 1988 to commemorate a foodball game between Colfax and St. John. It shows the 51 players and 2 mascots who participated in the game.
The first match between the two teams took place in 1938. At that time St. John won. 50 years later Colfax was able to make up for everything. They won the game and so the Codger Pole was carved from three fir trees in honor of the victory.
For the GPS: 398 S Main St, Colfax, WA 99111
Our rating: Not necessarily a must see but a nice road side attraction to stretch your feet a bit.
Artisans at the Dahmen Barn
Description: Just outside the small town of Uniontown, just off Highway 195, stands this barn. It is home to numerous artists who show and sell their works here.
For the GPS: 419 N Pkwy, Uniontown, WA 99179
Our rating: Unfortunately, the barn was closed when we visited in June 2015. However, we were more attracted by the unusual fence anyway. We like it very much because it provides great photo ops.
