Mount Hood
The Heartland - Oregon
Mount Hood
Description: The highest mountain in Oregon is also the fourth highest volcano in the Cascade Range. The cone is covered by 12 glaciers. These occupy 80% of the mountain's area. The last major eruption ended just before the Lewis and Clark expedition in 1806, but since there are always active fumaroles, the volcano is still considered active.
At the foot of the mountain stands Timberline Lodge, built in 1937. It provides the infrastructure for skiers and hikers. In 1980 it was also the setting for the movie Shining.
A little to the south you find Trillium Lake. When there is no wind and there are no people swimming in the lake, you get great reflections of Mt. Hood in the lake.
Our rating: We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Mount Hood. During our visit in June 2015, countless spring flowers were in bloom and provided a great backdrop to the mountain and surrounding landscape.
