Colton Point SP
Description: Colton Point State Park is found on the western side of Pine Creek Gorge, the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania.. It was named after Henry Colton, a lumberjack who lived and worked in the area. In the early 20th century, virtually all the trees along Pine Creek had been cut down. The fact that today everything is covered with forests again, is owed to an intensive reforestation and above all to the fact that the area was put under protection in the 30 years. Today, the park is managed together with its bigger brother on the other side of Pine Creek, the Leonard Harrison SP. The gorge itself is up to 787ft deep and up to 3937ft wide and offers numerous opportunities for recreation. You can hike, fish, camp and hunt.
Our rating: We visited Colton Point SP in October 2010. Unfortunately, the weather was not quite optimal, so the beautiful fall colors on the slopes of Pine Creek did not really show in their full beauty. Nevertheless, we had fun driving down the viewpoints and taking a look at the canyon from above.
