George Washington Bridge
Description: The busiest bridge in the world (up to 275000 vehicles/day) crosses the Hudson River and connects New Jersey with Manhattan. It was inaugurated in 1931, is 4761ft long and 213ft wide. For the trip to New York City, the crossing costs $16 per car. The trip in the direction to New Jersey is free of charge. So far it is still possible to pay the fee in cash when driving onto the bridge. (As of January 2020). Everything you need to know about the bridge, construction measures and fees can be found on the official homepage.
Our rating: We drove over the George Washington Bridge in October 2010. Even if the crossing is not exactly cheap, it is always something special and impressive to drive over such huge structures. You do not have the opportunity to do this very often, because we usually never rent a car for our visits to New York.
