The Grove (Chocorua Lake Conservancy)
Description: Chocorua Lake is a small lake about 10mi south of Conway. Although it has a dam at the outlet, it is a natural lake. The dam is used only to keep the water level constant. The lake is a protected area and an organization watches over it to make sure that, for example, houses on the lake are not visible. In addition, motorboats are prohibited to preserve the tranquility. However, the lake may be used by kayaks and inflatable boats. There are also some hiking trails in the north of the lake where you can explore the surroundings. There are a few parking spaces directly on the road from which you can walk a short distance around the lake.
Our rating: We first drove by Chocorua Lake on our way to Conway in 2010. Attracted by the great view, we made a short stop. Especially in the fall, when the trees change color, there are great views here. Because of the location, you often have a glassy lake surface, which has an additional charm.
Tamworth
Description: Tamworth is a small village south of the White Mountains. Basically, there is nothing special here that is somehow different from any other small village in the area. We came here rather by chance in the course of a painting demonstration in which I participated.
Our rating: Tamworth is a totally nice little village, which is quite typical for the whole area. Unfortunately, the Indian summer was almost over, so that the many colorful trees had almost lost their leaves. But even so, we liked it and it definitely showed us that it's really worth it in New Hampshire to just drive through the area, because even the smallest settlements offer many nice spots in the fall.
On the road
Description: If you drive through New Hampshire in autumn, during the Indian Summer, there are great places almost on every corner. You don't have to look very hard because the many, sometimes spectacularly colored trees are just great and they are everywhere along the way.
Our rating: To every fan of the USA we can only recommend to experience the Indian Summer in New England in autumn once. Yes, in Europe the trees also change color and that is of course also great, but not at all comparable.
