*The Recration Passport is the “flat rate” for all state parks in Michigan. The pass costs a one-time fee of $40 (non-residents) and can be purchased online, at the entrance of the respective state parks or at the Customer Service Centers of the Department of Natural Resources. The pass is valid for one calendar year.

Fort Wilkins Historic SP
Description: The Historic SP preserves the restored military outpost of Fort Wilkins. In 1844, Fort Wilkins was established at the direction of Secretary of War William Wilkins. The troops stationed there were to assist with local law enforcement and keep the peace between the miners and the local Ojibwas. However, the fort proved to be unnecessary as there were no conflicts between the miners and the Ojibwas. After the American Civil War, the fort was reactivated for a short time. At the end of August 1870, the army finally abandoned the facility. The fort was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.
Our rating: We really liked the small SP. Everything is very well preserved and presented in an interesting way. As a visitor, you can really immerse yourself in the time when the fort was still in operation.
