Whitefish Point

Description: Whitfish Point is located on the northern shore of the Upper Peninsula. It stretches out into Whitefish Bay. Here you will find a beautiful sandy beach and great views of Lake Superior. Part of the Seney National Wildlife Refuge (Whitefish Point Unit) is also located here.

Our rating: If you come here and visit the museum and the lighthouse, you should take a look at Lake Superior. Even if you feel like you're by the ocean here, it's “only” a huge freshwater lake. We had to remind ourselves several times that this is not the ocean.

Whitefish Point Lighthouse

Description: The Whitefish Point Lighthouse is a lighthouse in Chippewa County in the US state of Michigan. It is located on the southeastern shore of Lake Superior and stands on the edge of Whitefish Point, which leads to Whitefish Bay. It was built in 1849 and is the oldest operating lighthouse in the Upper Peninsula. All ships entering or leaving Lake Superior pass through Whitefish Point. The area is known as the “Graveyard of the Great Lakes” due to the numerous shipwrecks in the area, the most famous of which is the SS Edmund Fitzgerald.

Our rating: Very beautiful grounds that are definitely worth a visit. The lighthouse keeper's house is also definitely worth a visit.

Shipwreck Museum

Description: The lighthouse is part of the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum complex, which houses numerous relics of shipwrecks from the Whitefish Point Underwater Preserve, including the bell of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald. The lighthouse itself was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and the Michigan State Register of Historic Places in 1974.

Our rating: A very interesting little museum that is well worth a visit. It's impressive to see how many ships have sunk on the lake. This is another example of one of the great museums in the USA. It's always fun to discover the exhibits.
