Point Iroquise Lighthouse
Eastern Upper Peninsula - Michigan
Point Iroquois Lighthouse
Description: Point Iroquois and its light mark the boundary between Whitefish Bay and the western end of the St. Marys River, the connection between Lake Superior and the other Great Lakes. It was named after the Iroquois warriors who were massacred there by the Ojibwe in 1662. The Native Americans called the point “Nadouenigoning”, made up of the words “Nadone” (Iroquois) and “Akron” (bone). The station was shut down in 1962 and replaced by the Canadian-operated Gros Cap Reefs Light, an unmanned light in the channel of the St. Marys River. Today the lighthouse is a maritime museum.

Our rating: Unfortunately, the lighthouse was already closed when we visited, but it's still worth a short stop, as the lighthouse also offers beautiful photo opportunities from the outside.
