Motown Museum

Description: Motown is a music label that was founded in 1959 by Berry Gordy Jr. Motown is a combination of the words motor and town and alludes to the automobile city of Detroit, where the label was founded. “Hitsville U.S.A.” is the nickname for Motown's first headquarters and recording studio. Gordy remodeled the studio to use it as the record label's administration building and recording studio. After achieving mainstream success from the mid-1960s to the mid-1970s, Gordy moved the label to Los Angeles. Today, the “Hitsville U.S.A.” building is the Motown Museum, dedicated to the legacy of the record label, its artists and its music.

Our rating: Unfortunately, our days in Detroit in the fall of 2024 were so packed that we couldn't make time to visit the museum. It remains on the list for our next visit. However, as Motown is an integral part of Detroit, we still recommend a visit here to everyone. You should also definitely book tickets for the tour in advance.
