Eastern Market

Description: The Eastern Market is the largest historic market district in the United States. The Farmer's Market in Detroit was first opened in 1841 on Cadillac Square in the city center. Initially, the market was dedicated to selling hay and lumber. When several sheds were built at the current location in 1891, the Farmer's Market was moved from Cadillac Square and renamed to Eastern Market. In the following decades, the Eastern Market was expanded with additional sales halls. After the Second World War, more and more wholesalers and food processors settled in the area and Eastern Market developed into an important center for the wholesale food trade. From 1970 onwards, the stalls rented by the traders were decorated with paintings of food and animals. Over the years, these murals became the trademark of Eastern Market.

Our rating: As we were mainly interested in the murals, we were here on a day when there was no market. It wasn't too busy and so it was no problem to drive through the district, look for the murals and take photos. Anyone interested in this type of art is sure to find some great exhibits here. We liked it very much.
