Detroit Institute of Arts

Description: Founded in 1885, the Detroit Institute of Arts is one of the most important art museums in the United States. The collection comprises more than 65,000 exhibits. The central work is the “Detroit Industry” frescoes by Diego Rivera. These are located in the central courtyard of the museum. When the city had to file for insolvency in 2014, the works of art were removed from the insolvency assets and transferred to a foundation. This saved the museum.

Our rating: The museum is great. There really is something to discover for every taste in art. Works of art from all eras and all parts of the world have been brought together. It is simply fun to walk through the rooms and discover the beautifully presented works. In our opinion, there is no way around this museum for anyone who loves art. An absolute recommendation.
Tip: At several points in the museum you will find staff who will explain certain works of art to you free of charge or to whom you can ask questions. There are also daily free guided tours of the museum. These last an hour and also receive our recommendation.
