Cranbrook Museum of Art

Description: The Cranbrook Art Museum presents and collects 20th and 21st century art, architecture, crafts and design with a special focus on the artists and graduates of the Cranbrook Academy of Art.

Our rating: During our visit, most of the museum was closed because a new exhibition was being put up. This meant that we could “only” visit the exhibition by Toshiko Takaetsu. However, as the entire complex and the outdoor area are really great, the visit was well worth it. The Saarinen House and the Frank Lloyd Wright Smith House on the grounds are additional highlights that remain on the list for the next visit.

Collection Wing Tour

Description: The Collection Wing Tour gives you an exclusive look behind the scenes of the museum. Guided by a student from the Academy, we were taken through the halls where the works of art are stored, that are not currently on display in the museum. We were also given lots of information about the artworks and the museum.

The tour fee is 20$ and includes admission to the museum. As places are limited, it is advisable to book the tour online in advance.

Our rating: Cranbrook is not so much focused on painting, but is more concerned with the “Gesamtkunstwerk”. A German word that is probably also used in English, as I learned during the tour. You can find everything in the museum that has a connection to art in the broadest sense. This includes design in all shapes and colors, as well as visual, fine and performing arts. Anyone interested in art will definitely get their money's worth on this tour.
