Kansas State Capitol
Description: Since Kansas became a U.S. state in 1861, Topeka has been its capital. The current State Capitol was opened in 1903. It is one of the few capitols that still offers tours to the dome of the building. Therefore you have to climb more than 260 steps.
The Capitol is known for the many murals that are all over the building. Particularly well known are those by John Steuart Curry, located on the second floor. They were made in the 1930s and deal with the history of Kansas.
Our rating: Whenever possible, we try to visit the State Capitols if we are in the area. Here in Topeka we were in June 2017. On a guided tour we learned many interesting facts about the building and Kansas. Unfortunately, the dome was not open during our visit We liked the Capitol here in Kansas and so we can recommend a visit. If you have a little interest in American history, you will certainly find interesting things to see here.
