Arlington National Cemetery

Description: Arlington is the second largest national cemetery in the United States, with 5400 burials per year. It is located in Virginia, west of the capital Washington DC. The cemetery was opened in 1864 and offers, in addition to soldiers and veterans of the American armed forces, also two presidents the last resting place. Thus, besides J.F. Kennedy, William Howard Taft is also buried here. Before entering the cemetery, one should make a stop at the Visitor Center. Here you can get a map of the cemetery and all necessary information. There are also some interesting points for tourists to visit. So, besides the grave of J.F. Kennedy, the grave of the unknown soldiers of the great wars in which the U.S. was involved, is interesting and worth a visit.

Our rating: The visit to Arlington was very interesting. To be shown how many people die in wars is very memorable. The people who lie here are only a tiny fraction of them. The cemetery is huge. All those who have relatives here are therefore allowed to use cars to visit the cemetery. Even though motorized tours are offered for visitors, most tourists walk. Since the cemetery is very popular, it is often very busy, especially on the way to the grave of J.F. Kennedy.

President John F. Kennedy Graveside

Description: A popular, if not the most visited, grave at the cemetery is that of U.S. President J.F. Kennedy and his wife Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, who was laid to rest next to her husband in 1992. In addition to the Kennedy couple, two children and two of the president's brothers are also buried here.

Our rating: When we visited in October 2013, there was a construction site at the gravesite as the gas supply to the eternal flame lit by Jacqueline Kennedy in 1963 was being overhauled. Since the memorial was the original reason for our visit, this was a bit disappointing. But that's the way it is sometimes.
