Rock City
Description: Rock City is located about 25mi north of Salina. Except for the last 0.9mi, the entire drive is paved. The small park is managed by a non-profit organization. The entrance fees are used for the maintenance of the location. Rock City consists of three groups of more or less large bouldering structures made of Dakota sandstone. Many look a bit like giant cannonballs. Since the boulder balls are in the grass, paths are mowed to make access easier. This makes it very easy to view all three groups. The area is listed as a National Natural Landmark.
Our rating: It is sometimes quite amazing what nature produces. The balls are just lying on the lawn and you inevitably wonder how they got here, because all around there is nothing but flat grassland. The area is very small and not necessarily very spectacular. Nevertheless, we had two hours of fun roaming around here. The balls are partly huge, impressive and offer pretty photo motifs. Not an absolute must see, but a nice change on the way through the vastness of Kansas.
