Monument Rocks
Kansas
Note: On dirt roads, road conditions can change constantly. Therefore, we strongly recommend that everyone check the road conditions before each trip. We do not recommend driving on unpaved roads before, during or shortly after rain or snowfall.
Here are the GPX files of the drive to Monument Rocks
Our visits: So far 1 visit in June 2017
Directions
Description of how to get there: The junction to the dirt road leading to Monument Rocks is about 25mi south of the small town of Oakley on Highway 83. Coordinate: Latitude 38.829753, Longitude -100.854156. The junction is signed. The remaining 7mi are throughout unpaved. During our visit in June 2017, the road was in very good condition. One could have driven with any passenger car. Since oil is produced in the area, it is safe to assume that the roads will remain in good condition as well. Along the dirt road you have to turn off a few times. All junctions are also signed, so you should be able to find Monument Rocks very easily.
Monument Rocks
Description: The Monument Rocks consist of two groups of white sandstone formations. You can move freely everywhere to explore the Rocks. The rocks are made of limestone and are up to 69ft high. The area is not very large so that you should have explored everything in one or two hours.
Our rating: We liked Monument Rocks very much. Unlike in the Southwest, you have such locations all to yourself here in the loneliness of Kansas. We had fun wandering between the huge rock formations and looking for nice photo opportunities.
