Downtown
San Francisco - California
Cable Car
Description: The cable cars are one of the city's top attractions. Today, they are one of the few moving National Historic Landmarks and the only surviving cable streetcar with decouplable cars. In 1873, the first line went into service in San Francisco. In 1906, nearly everything was destroyed in the Great Fire. The network and cars were rebuilt, but were used only for the steepest streets. All other lines were replaced by electric streetcars. In 1947, the last cable cars were to be taken out of service. But resistance arose and so the cars remained in operation. As all the equipment became more and more worn out over time, both the entire network and the cars had to be restored from the ground up. The grand reopening took place in 1984. Since then, the cable cars are a must see for all San Francisco tourists.
Our rating: A ride with the cable car, over the steep streets of the city, is simply part of every San Francisco visit. It's fun, you see something of the city and that's why we recommend it!
Chinatown
Description: Founded in the 1860s, Chinatown San Francisco is one of the oldest in the USA. The district covers 24 blocks and is one of the biggest tourist attractions in the city. There are countless Asian stores and restaurants, attracting lots of tourists from all over the world. During our visit in September 2019, we visited a fortune cookie factory. You could watch skilled hands producing this classic. The entrance is free.
For the GPS: 156 Ross Alley, San Francisco, CA 94108 (Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Company)
Our rating: It was interesting to stroll through the streets and take a look in the store windows. The visit to the cookie factory was super fun and we also liked the results. For us, a visit to Chinatown is part of a visit to San Francisco.
Coit Tower
Description: The Coit Tower on Telegraph Hill is a 210ft high tower that offers nice views of the city. There are a few parking spaces directly at the tower for those who want to save themselves the climb up the hill. However, they are occupied relatively quickly. Therefore, it certainly doesn't hurt to be here before 10am, or to have patience. There is an elevator inside the tower to get to the top.
Our rating: A very nice viewpoint in the middle of the city. We liked it here very much.
Entrance fees and opening hours
- 9$/person for the elevator
- Daily from 10 am to 6 pm

Financial District
Description: Like many big cities in the US, San Francisco has some very nice and distinctive skyscrapers. This is the business district of the city. Besides numerous companies and offices, there are also bars, stores and impressive buildings to see. Particularly striking and beautiful to look at is the Transamerica Pyramide (left picture).
Our rating: We always think the huge skyscrapers are very impressive and often worth seeing. A little bit you feel like an ant next to the huge houses. If you have a little time left over during your visit to San Francisco, you should take a walk through downtown.
Lombard Street
Description: Another tourist attraction of the city is the most curvy street in the world. On 476ft the Lombard Street has thereby 10 curves. These were created in 1922 because the slope of 27% was a problem for cars. Today it is always beautifully planted and maintained and therefore also offers a nice photo op.
Our rating: Lombard Street is also a destination that probably most San Francisco tourists head for. It is fun to drive down the curves and therefore we think that you can certainly stop by.
Union Square
Description: Union Square is a public square in the heart of downtown San Francisco. Around the place there are many stores of well-known brands, as well as restaurant and café`s. The square invites you to shopp but also to relax.
For the GPS: 333 Post St, San Francisco, CA 94108
Our rating: Since Union Square is very centrally located, visitors are almost bound to pass by here. Not an unconditional must see, but still quite nice, especially if you want to do a little shopping in San Francisco.
