Mud Vulcano/Sulfur Caldron
Yellowstone NP South - Wyoming
Mud Vulcano
Description: Within this geothermal formation, rather than colorful and dazzling pools, you'll find bubbling, sulfur-smelling mud holes and lakes.
Mud Vulcano itself was still a mud-filled hill around 1870. After an explosion two years later, the mud was thrown out and Mut Vulcano got its present appearance.
Our rating: Just because the pools and geothermal features here are so different from the rest of the park, Mud Vulcano is very worth seeing. Even if you don't want to climb the mountain to walk the whole, about 0.6mi long, path, you get a nice impression here. The Mud Vulcano itself is located at the foot of the hill.
Sulfur Caldron
Description: Sulfur Caldron is located across the street from Mud Vulcano. Here, too, it bubbles and steams all over the place, as this is one of the most active geothermal sites in the park. The mud pools are extremely hot and acidic, but still there are bacteria that can live here. Sulfur Caldron can be admired only by means of a viewpoint from the road.
Our rating: Here you can experience the volcanic activity with all your senses, because the air is not only sulphur-soaked, it also hisses from everywhere. This is a worthwhile little stop for us on our drive through Yellowstone NP.
