Charlevoix

Description: Charlevoix is a small town in the north of the Lower Peninsula, directly on Lake Michigan. Charlevoix calls itself “Charlevoix the Beautiful”, which was also the title of a book by the well-known local architect Earl Young.

Our rating: Charlevoix is a typical small town like you would find anywhere in Michigan. When we visited in October 2024, the Apple Fest was taking place at the same time. There was a lot going on and the atmosphere was relaxed and friendly. Definitely a pretty little town that is worth a little detour.

Earl Young Mushroom Houses

Description: What is special about Earl Young's mushroom houses is that he did not use any construction plans. His philosophy was to adapt the design to the landscape so that the houses ultimately blended into the surroundings and did not dominate them. During his creative phase, he created 26 residential and 4 commercial buildings. The houses can be viewed from the outside. They are all privately owned. The location of the houses can be checked in this Brochure .

Our rating: The Mushroom Houses were the main reason why we paid a visit to this small town. Certainly not an absolute must-see, but if you enjoy architecture and pretty houses, you can certainly spend a good hour or two here.
