Shiprock
Description: Shiprock (Navajo: Tsé Bitʼaʼí, rock with wings) is a monolith rising almost 1583feet from the ground. Its peak is 7177feet above sea level. It is located about 11mi southwest of the town of Shiprock, which is named after it.
The prominent rock plays an important role in Navajo religion, myths and tradition. It is the most famous landmark in northwestern New Mexico. In 1975, it was declared a National Natural Landmark by the National Park Service.
Our rating: No matter from which direction you approach, you can spot the huge Shiprock from afar. Such a large monolith is simply impressive. On a dirt road you can drive directly to the foot of the rock. The road was in good condition when we visited in June 2023. You could have driven on it with a passenger car. Shiprock is definitely worth a little stop.
